About the Professor range in the 1890s
Boosey and Hawkes were originally two seperate firms - Hawkes and Son, and Boosey & Co. In the 1890s Hawkes and Sons were
well regarded manufacturers of Violins, Cellos and Double Basses. The Professor range was their introductory model, a robust well made
instrument with deep tones but a sweet even sound. Many were supplied to concert orchestras, music hall orchestras and similar, and they
were considered to be superior but affordable models. Many were actually made in France, especially in the 1890s. This model bears the
hallmark amber colour, flamed back and finish consistent with the French models.
